Solstice by Jaanika Talts

All over the Northern Hemisphere, there were ancient festivals marking the shortest days of the year when the sun appeared to “stand still.” Solstice is from the latin sōl-stitium which translates as Sun stop or Sun still.  According to an old Celtic myth, on the solstices of each year the Oak King, representing the light, and the Holly King, representing the dark, would fight, with the Oak King emerging victorious at the winter solstice, enabling the return of the light.  The solstice was one of the most important celebrations in the pre-Christian world.  The winter solstice sunrise alignment at Newgrange is more than a celestial event; it holds spiritual significance for many. The fleeting burst of sunlight symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, a theme woven into various cultures and belief systems.

This original work by artist Jaanika Talts symbolises the return of the light as we move from the darkest day and mark the return of the light.
