Winter Wren by Carl Strickland.

This new oil painting from Carl Strickland is of a wren in winter, perched on a branch with green and brown leaves. The background captures a soft winter atmosphere with a muted colour palette, highlighting the bird's delicate features and the intricate patterns of the leaves.  Wrens, despite their often subtle plumage, are highly admired for their energetic behavior and loud, complex songs, which are a stark contrast to their unassuming appearance.

Wrens features prominently in Irish and Celtic folklore, and stories relating to the species abound. Among the most familiar is the fable describing how the canny wren duped the mighty eagle to become “the king of all birds”, and another tells of the wren whose call betrayed St Stephen, the first Christian Martyr. The old tradition of hunting the wren is still commemorated on St Stephen’s day. Although nowadays the bird is thankfully spared, processions of “wren boys” go from house to house singing a variation of the old song as they go….“The wren, the wren, the king of all birds; St. Stephen’s Day was caught in the furze; Although he is little, his family is great; I pray you, good landlady, give us a treat.”
