Join artist Helen Woods in The Gaslamp Gallery on Saturday 20th July 2024 from 1.30pm – 4.30pm
Helen will be in the gallery to chat and explain the fascinating painting process with encaustic. Helen uses the ancient technique to capture scenes from local coastlines, woodlands, and countryside with wax, pigment, and a blowtorch.
Encaustic art, also known as hot wax painting, is a technique that involves using heated beeswax mixed with coloured pigments. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface, typically wood, although canvas and other materials can also be used. Artists manipulate the wax with metal tools and special brushes before it cools and solidifies, allowing for rich textures and vibrant colors. This ancient art form dates back to the Greeks and Romans and offers durability and a unique, luminous quality to artworks.
