Paul Funge (1944 - 2011)
A native of Gorey, Co Wexford, Paul was a founder of the Project Arts Centre in Dublin and the founder of Gorey Arts Centre in 1970. In addition, he established the Gorey Arts Festival and ran it for more than 15 years. Paul was the man responsible for bringing a certain young band billed as “Ireland's newest rock sensation” called U2 to play on the closing night of the 11th annual Funge Arts Festival in 1980. A painter of portraits and landscapes, Paul taught art in many schools including Clongowes Wood College and Newbridge College. He also lectured at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), the University of California, and Kunsthistorisch Instituut in Amsterdam. As a portrait artist his sitters included U2’s Adam Clayton, Frank McGuinness and Colm Tóibín as well as many ministers and academics.
